What Is Midimalism? Etsy’s Design Trend Edit Is Here

Tempted by the butter yellow craze? Ready to fill your home with ruffles? There are plenty of interiors trends to get excited about this season – but the experts at Etsy are here to give us even more wisdom. Read on for all the biggest design trends from the Etsy team.

What Is Midimalism? Etsy’s Design Trend Edit Is Here

From bright green kitchens to leopard print decor, the interior design world is full of colour and whimsy this spring. Yet according to Etsy’s trend expert, Dayna Isom Johnson, it’s ‘midimalism’ that’s set to take over.

‘This season, midimalism is setting the tone: where statement pieces meet everyday ease, and personal style feels more natural than ever,’ says Dayna. ‘Whether you’re embracing playful coquette chaos, layering in rustic European elegance, having a futuristic metallic moment, or making waves with fresh takes on nautical-inspired pieces, Spring/Summer 2025 is all about embracing creativity in a way that’s both intentional and unapologetically you.’

So, what kind of zany trends and aesthetics can we expect to see over the next few months? Dayna gives us the rundown.

The ‘Literary Girl’ Aesthetic

Shelf styling? Book curation? Literature has never been more of a staple in interior design. ‘As physical books make a major comeback this year, so do the places that celebrate them: think vibey book bars, cool-girl book clubs, and sun-drenched afternoons spent lost in a great beach read,’ Dayna explains.

But what does that mean for your interiors? Home libraries, reading nooks, and any literary-themed decor, apparently. ‘It’s clear that reading is more than just a hobby; it’s a lifestyle,’ Dayna states. ‘From vintage book stacks doubling as decor to personalized book embossers that mark your most treasured reads, literary culture has never been cooler.’

The ‘Messy Coquette’ Look

Bows and frills are already one of the biggest design trends we’re seeing this spring, but the Etsy team sees things evolving a little differently. ‘Coquette, but make it cool-girl: this season, the aesthetic is flirtier, campier, and way more fun,’ Dayna says. ‘A playful evolution of hyper-feminine style, the Messy Coquette trend blends ’90s and Y2K pop star energy with effortlessly undone charm, inviting you to be the most extra version of yourself.’

The ‘Island Luxe’ Vibe

Sardinecore might not have made headlines last year, but island interiors are back with a bang – White Lotus-style. ‘Fuelled by the latest cultural moments like binge-worthy resort dramas and island-inspired chart-toppers, Island Luxe is bringing vacation energy to the forefront this season,’ says Dayna. ‘Also known as Resortcore or Tourist-Chic, this trend is all about making an intentional statement (looking at you, midimalism!). Breezy linens and natural textures like raffia serve up that sun-kissed glamour with a touch of beachside indulgence – or give your space a taste of the tropics with citrus-shaped mugs, tropical scented candles, and a statement fruit bowl.’

‘Châteaucore’ Style

Cottagecore is timeless and Rivieracore is growing, but Châteaucore has just arrived. ‘This year we’ve stepped into something a little more romantic and storied: Châteaucore,’ says Dayna. ‘On Etsy, it’s clear this old-world aesthetic is having a major moment: France cottage decor is one of the top-searched terms on Etsy this year.’ Airy fabrics, embroidered table linens, and vintage glassware is the way to go, with a touch of gold for that signature French finish.

The ‘Galactic Metallic’ Trend

Taking its cue from the modern surrealism aesthetic is cosmic-inspired design. ‘As space travel and sci-fi aesthetics shape culture, fashion and design are following suit,’ Dayna explains. ‘Galactic Metallic is a futuristic evolution of last season’s chrome craze, bringing with it liquid silver that shimmers like a meteor shower, holographic textures straight out of a sci-fi dream, and reflective fabrics that make you look like you just stepped of a spaceship.’

If silver accents and space-inspired artwork isn’t your thing, however, start with a moody colour palette instead. Think deep blue ceramics, crystal mugs, and half moon lamps, apparently.

The ‘Maritime Living’ Movement

‘Forget crisp yacht-club whites; Maritime Living is all about embracing the raw, untamed spirit of the sea,’ notes Dayna. ‘Inspired by the real-deal fishermen and seafarers, this trend brings a rugged edge to classic coastal style. Sea glass accents and handcrafted details bring ocean-inspired tranquility to interiors, and while stripes are an undeniable summer wardrobe staple, they’re making major waves in home decor too, with sales for striped items up double digits across rugs, linens, and wall art.’
