Barbiecore, inspired by the Mattel doll and hit movie, took the world by storm and was the top ‘core’ in 2022. However, by 2024, several other cores — or home design aesthetics — gained steam. A new report by Taskrabbit lists the top 7 core home design trends of 2024 (based on analyzing thousands of Taskrabbit bookings).

According to Tamara Rosenthal, vice president of marketing at Taskrabbit, social trends have a huge impact on home design. “Taskrabbit’s 2024 trend report dives into how trending cores are transforming the way our users leverage the platform to bring their creative visions to life and personalize their homes.” And whether it’s sporty chic or western flair, she tells me that she loves seeing how people are curating spaces that reflect their personal styles.

These are the 7 trending core home design trends identified by Taskrabbit.

Gardencore

Rosenthal says Taskrabbit requests for outdoor weddings, are up 200%, and landscaping, pebble walkways, fountains, and hydrangeas are up 10% to 17%.

From lush landscapes to rustic furniture (furniture assembly is up 12%) to a romantic oasis, Taskrabbit users want to relax. “Burned out from the hustle and bustle of modern life and being plugged into technology 24/7, people are romanticizing nature, gardening, and outdoor beauty like never before,” Rosenthal explains.

According to Heather Mastrangeli, founder and interior designer at Innovatus Design in DuPage County, Illinois, bringing the outdoors in and elevating outdoor living areas has been very trendy lately – and she doesn’t see that going away. “We receive emotional and psychological benefits from outdoor elements and there will continue to be a drive to connect with nature effortlessly,” she says. Mastrangeli believes that the more we can bring that connection into our homes, the healthier and happier we will be.

Craftcore

Hobbying, crafting, and crocheting are all a part of the craftcore trend. “Requests that include murals are up 27%, gallery walls are up 26%, mosaics are up 12%, and handmade items are up 10%,” Rosenthal says. And crafters want to incorporate their handmade projects into their décor, and they’re covering their walls with bold and creative choices.

Traditionally, Mastrangeli says hobbies weren’t integrated in the home interior environment. “Now, people love to show off how they spend their time, and making useful items is part of that,” she explains. “From woodworking – hello heirloom clock – to knitting, pottery, baskets, and more, we see handmade items becoming an integrated part of interior design.”

Hostingcore

Hostingcore took off this year, and 2024 was the year of the backyard entertaining space. “Requests with sleeper sofas increased by 113%, and we also saw increases in home bars, light hanging, parties, mini fridges, and party cleaning,” Rosenthal tells me.

More and more, Mastrangeli says people want to be ready to host at a moment’s notice. “Dry bars, wet bars, and having the table set at all times can pave the way to hosting success,” she says.

Sportscore

The movie Challengers, led to an 80% increase in pickleball terminology included in Taskrabbit requests. “Locker room maintenance increased by 61%, sports gear increased by 33%, and home gym increased by 17%,” Rosenthal says.

This comes as no surprise to Mastrangeli, who notes that many people love watching and playing sports, so it’s only natural that they would want to incorporate sports into their interiors. “In the past, sports memorabilia was relegated to the basement, but now, it’s becoming more common in other living spaces – and these items can be great conversation pieces,” she says.

Westerncore

“The iconic Western look is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, and timeless elements like leather, suede, and fringe are becoming more popular,” Rosenthal says. Campground, has increased 300%, while saloon, saddle, cacti/cactus, and cozy décor are also surging.

According to June Mckenzy, product design director at Bedsure, as we settle into cozy season, people are looking for comfort and warmth. “Whether it’s the bedroom or living room, consumers want to create a haven within their homes,” she says. “Blankets and throws offer a bit of extra warmth for those chilly nights or quiet evenings at home, creating that perfect snug spot.”

Mastrangeli tells me that westerncore is interesting because of the various ways to interpret the trend. “Some prefer to use natural materials like leather in their spaces, while others go all out.” In fact, in one room that she designed, Mastrangeli used brightly-colored cow art to bring a touch of western whimsy into the child’s bedroom.

Techcore

It’s no surprise that techcore is trending, especially as people try to create the perfect WFH office. Rosenthal says there’s a focus on sleek, modern design, futuristic design, and high-tech gadgets. “Computer help is up 224%, smart home installation is up 220%, and security systems are up 175%,” she says. Wireless, and theater seats, are also up significantly.

Technology has become ingrained in everything we do, and Mastrangeli says she’s always looking for ways to ‘future proof’ her clients’ homes from a technology standpoint. “Integrating technology in home offices is key to remote working — and now appliances, like washers and dryers, are sending notifications directly to smart devices.”

Colorcore

Say goodbye to light-colored shiplap, and hello to bold, bright colors. “Eclectic, is up 200%, while decorative pillows are up 80%, wallpaper is up 70%, pink is up 23%, and bold is up 21%,” Rosenthal says. She notes that people are choosing bright walls, colorful furniture, and bold home accessories.

According to Mastrangeli, people have grown tired of sterile interiors, so she’s not surprised that colorcore is a popular core home design trend. “People are ready for vibrancy and color – and I love incorporating bright pops of color in my clients’ interiors.”

These are some of the items that can help you incorporate your favorite core home design trend.
