In my top spiked pick I have selected the 87 SC from Payntr, which has clearly taken things up a notch. Named as such because it is Jason Day’s lucky number, the SC is a complete shoe that we loved in testing.
First, from a looks perspective we think it is refined and we enjoyed the detailing and touches of gold additions dotted across the silhouette. This isn’t a loud shoe, but we think the classy styling puts it up against some clean silhouettes like the G/FORE Gallivan2r G/Lock, FootJoy Premiere Series Field or the Adidas MC80.
Next the carbon fibre propulsion plate situated just above the outsole is the real stand-out performer of this shoe. It runs the full length of the shoe and allows you to more effectively harness ground reaction forces. As such in testing the amount of rebound felt through the sole of the foot was outstanding, when walking and hitting shots. That this outsole also uses seven of the Soft Spikes Tour Flex Pro spikes makes for a shoe that breathes confidence in how powerfully you can swing the club because the traction is right up there with the best on the market. The foot locks closely but comfortably in place across the tongue area and the heel, giving that classic locked-in sensation.
Best spikeless

The crown of best spikeless shoe in this waterproof guide goes to the adidas Adizero ZG, one of the most comfortable golf shoes in the game right now. The new outsole is the star of the show, easily matching the grip and security we normally get from conventional spiked golf shoes. The aggressive lugs on the outside of the outsole are so aggressive they look like studs, but they’re ok to wear inside your golf club and provide exceptional lateral grip that we enjoyed during testing.
These shoes are incredibly light as well, making them one of the best golf shoes for walking. The soft material combines with a moulded heel cushion, inspired by some of adidas’ best running shoes, to target your heel for extra padding and comfort. I felt locked in to both the shoe and the ground throughout the swing which gave me piece of mind, even in wet conditions.
Speaking of which they are 100% waterproof but a word of warning when using these shoes in wet, muddy conditions, the exposed Lightstrike foam can get dirty easily and it is tricky to clean. However in terms of your feet inside the shoe, they will remain bone-dry so no worries there.
Best traction

Another strong addition to G/FORE’s ever growing collection of golf shoes, the MG4+ O2 shoes are an exceptionally comfortable and grippy pair of spiked golf shoes.
The comfort comes for G/FORE’s unique insole which is covered in small nubs that give your foot a massage as you walk along. This will feel weird as you try the shoe on for the first time and may take a couple of rounds to get used to, but it’s easily my favorite feature of G/FORE golf shoes. If you’re starting to ache and tire toward the end of the round, simply wiggle your toes or move your foot around in the shoe, and you can get a nice little massaging sensation. It’s a feature no other shoe possesses and as a result I think the brand deserve a lot of credit in delivering it.
Although the midsole is a little too chunky for my liking, the outsole is an area in which I have little criticisms of. Although it isn’t overly difficult to provide a well executed outsole on a spiked shoe, especially when we consider the quality of modern golf shoes these days, G/FORE have still done a terrific job here. It uses 10 Tour Flex Pro Softspikes, which is more than on the Adidas Tour360 24 or Under Armour Drive Pro, but it doesn’t feel like overkill. In fact the sole design with the spikes added make the traction in particular very good indeed, ideal for those wet conditions.
Finally not only is this one of the comfiest shoes on the market, I’d also throw it into the conversation for one of the best spiked golf shoes as well.
Best for comfort

Only narrowly missing out on a top spot in this guide, the Hyperflex from FootJoy are all about pure performance. The FootJoy HyperFlex Carbon was my favorite shoe of 2023 and FootJoy haven’t ripped up the playbook with the latest iteration, providing simple but slightly upgraded looks whilst adding to the comfort and traction on offer.
Although they may not be the most eye-catching shoe on the market and some shoppers may want something a bit more bold in terms of styling, I appreciate how FootJoy have let the performance of this shoe do the talking. I felt comfort the moment I slipped these shoes on during testing and I felt supported from my very first swing. Through the swing, the shoe flexed in the areas I needed it to while supporting it in key areas through the swing too. The PowerPlate on the sole helps boost energy transfer during the swing to enhance speed. The TPU Saddle on the upper also helps promote speed and power, taking any energy from your foot moving upwards in the shoe and transferring it back into the ground.
This is an excellent, durable, all-rounder of a shoe that can be trusted to perform all 12 months of the year no matter the conditions. I think it speaks volumes that FootJoy athlete Justin Thomas has switched from a classic style of FootJoy shoe to the Hyperflex given the quality of the shoes.
Best grip

Under Armour’s flagship shoe from 2024 was the Drive Pro, which comes in both spiked and spikeless models, and remains a worthy inclusion on this list. The SL (spikeless) version is one of the best spikeless shoes we’ve tested this year and the Drive Pro spiked is a fantastic shoe too, especially in wet weather.
The Drive Pro is the shoe of choice for Under Armour brand ambassador Jordan Spieth, and two years of research and development went into the production of it. That research ultimately led to a Swing Support System known as S3. This S3 is an all encompassing system which covers the midsole, traction and even the new lacing system to provide increased performance.
In my testing these shoes really delivered and it’s easy to see why Spieth wears them. The tech in the shoe helps to keep your foot nicely planted and well supported, while still allowing your foot to move where it needs too. A new midsole constructed from softer and energy returning foam means the overall comfort has now improved as well.
I enjoyed the new lacing system and spikes too, along with the lightweight feel at just 12oz. One complaint would be that we weren’t huge fans of the writing on the side of the shoe, which distracts from what would otherwise be a really great looking shoe. We also have to say that the quality of the upper materials don’t quite meet that of some of its direct rivals, which offer softer, more premium materials throughout the upper, but in fairness the Drive Pro does come in at a slightly lower price point and there is no drop off in performance.
Best value

The S2G SL is the latest shoe in adidas’ crossover category and offers golfers a shoe that can be worn from dawn until dusk, on and off the golf course. The S2G SL (there is also a spiked version available) is based off an iconic running shoe design, hence the modern, sporty silhouette.
Aesthetically, I think these shoes look fantastic. As already mentioned, the S2G SL is designed to be worn on and off the course and, from our testing, we can comfortably say it delivers on both fronts. Another plus point is that you have a choice of multiple colorways, so there should be a look and taste for everyone.
Adidas have used their Lightstrike technology through the midsole, something which has been used to great effect in the best adidas golf shoes and which really enhances the comfort on the course. Another big plus point to these shoes is the price, which is surprisingly low considering the quality on offer, making the S2G SL one of the best budget golf shoes we’ve tested. This value goes even further as well because not only can they be used anywhere, but any time of year too because of the 100% waterproof upper and construction.
Best BOA model

The Ecco LT1 features a sporty aesthetic with curved lines and flowing design elements, which when combined with the supreme comfort on offer makes it one of best Ecco golf shoes I’ve tested. I tested the BOA option but there are also standard lace shoes with a variety of colors too.
Ecco has used a new midsole foam called Ecco Ltyr alongside its renowned Fluidform technology to provide more cushioning and more rebound than ever before, and the comfort levels are off the charts. It certainly impressed me in testing, as the cushioning felt superb which made walking the course and enjoyable experience. The seriously lightweight design further aided the comfort and it was like walking on air.
Although this shoe is waterproof, the outsole is solid but not spectacular and I would probably go for the Ecco Biom G5 if you regularly play in a lot of rain or wet weather conditions. Nevertheless, this is an excellent shoe for dry or damp conditions, but in the worst of weathers it may come up a little short compared to some of the competition. That being said your feet will remain bone-dry when house in them.
Best arch support

Another classic looking shoe that passes the eye test are the Skechers Go Golf Prestige shoes, a pair that provides lots of arch support for players who struggle with flat feet and have trouble walking 18 holes as a result.
The Arch Fit is a game changer for those with flat feet like myself. It gently lifts the arch of your foot upwards to help reduce foot fatigue and overall aches and pains. This is then complimented by the excellent slip in technology and the heel pillow feature which adds comfort both putting them on in the golf club locker room and whilst walking the golf course. This is truly one of the softest heel experiences I’ve tested in a golf shoe, and if you find this particular part of your foot painful or problematic in other shoes, then the Skechers could be your answer to more comfort. Additionally the grip in all conditions was good and they are 100% waterproof as I would expect from a modern shoe.
This is yet another impressive offering from Skechers who have really upped their game in terms of golf shoes in the last number of years and impressed us so much that they earned a spot on our Editor’s Choice awards list for 2025. They are without doubt one of the best Skechers golf shoes and one of the best value golf shoes of the year, too.
Best lightweight

Last year’s Biom H4 was a favorite of mine, as was 2022’s Biom C4, and I was excited to get my hands on the new H5 shoes as a result. The look on offer here is a real differentiation from some of the other spikeless models I’ve tested this year and combines Ecco’s typically classic silhouette with an up-to-date twist thanks to the unique outsole.
These aren’t the grippiest of spikeless golf shoes, I’ll warn. Ecco’s ‘Terra Traction System’ is far from class-leading but still provided solid traction during testing. The outsole is a little simplistic when compared to the likes of he FootJoy Pro/SLX Carbon or Under Armour Drive Pro SL. These are a very comfortable, lightweight and valid option for players who play in only fair weather or in the summer months, but because of the spikeless outsole I would probably recommend a spiked model above if you play all year round. That being said they are 100% waterproof and will house your feet nicely.
As always with the best Ecco golf shoes, the comfort levels here are off the scale. The seam-knit sock construction at the top of the foot is a delight and when combined with the premium quality of the upper leather and the levels of cushioning on the sole, you get an enjoyable shoe to wear. They’re also boasting a style that is wearable rather easily both on and off the golf course which I always appreciate.
How we test golf shoes
Golf Monthly has a strong testing procedure when it comes to testing golf shoes that consists of putting them to the test over a number of rounds and in a variety of different conditions. We believe this variety is essential, especially when trying to find the best waterproof golf shoes. Only by playing in the wet can we test how well these shoes operate in bad weather, while we can also assess their grip, stability and durability across different terrains.
We are able to do this by just playing the game normally, as during every round of golf we find ourselves dealing with odd positions and in unusual stances, so it is the best way to mimic the standard conditions any normal golfer would play in. Prior to this testing though, we will usually attend product launches and meet with the manufacturer’s R&D experts to understand the new technology. It is important to stress that manufacturers cannot buy a good review though, because here at Golf Monthly all of our writers tell it how it is for all golf product reviews, not just golf shoes.

How to choose golf shoes
What factors should you consider when trying to find the best waterproof golf shoe for you? Let’s take a look.
1. Waterproofing
Obviously, if you are looking for waterproof shoes then being able to keep water out is the most important factor! Most golf shoes these days offer a level of waterproof protection but some, like the models above, are much better than others. So our first piece of advice is to be sure to take an in-depth look at golf shoe specifications to see if the brand says a shoe is 100 percent waterproof, or just water-resistant. It is also worth checking to see if a model has a waterproof guarantee or warranty as well. You will find this on many of the options on our best winter golf shoes list.
2. Comfort
Comfort is also an important factor here as walking around for five hours in shoes that don’t feel good is a miserable experience. Golf shoes must be comfortable regardless of the weather conditions you play in, and the most comfortable golf shoes will have specific foam technologies, or sole designs that are built to keep your feet feeling well supported and fresh all day long on the golf course.
3. Grip/Stability/Traction
Obviously when conditions are wet the ground becomes more slippery and therefore your golf shoes need to have a good level of stability and grip. If your feet are slipping on the ground then there is a good chance you won’t hit a good shot, not least because you wont have the confidence to fully commit to the golf shot in the first place. As such, it is important to be aware of what research brands have done into traction patterns, lugs and spikes on the golf shoes so you know which models will make sure your feet don’t slip. In the past spiked shoes were essential for playing in the wet, but technology has advanced to the point now where many spikeless shoes can perform almost as well as their spiked counterparts.
4. Looks
This is entirely subjective but it is important to make sure you like the look of your golf shoes and to feel good about what you are wearing on the course. Golfers need every little edge they can get, and feeling like a million bucks because you look the part can only help. The good news is that the market is so flooded with different types of shoes now that there is a model above for all different types of fashion sense. You can go for classic finishes like the Payntr Eighty Seven SC Golf Shoe, or ones that stand out a bit more, and have modern touches like the adidas Tour360 24 Golf Shoe or the Nike Air Zoom Infinity Tour Next% 2.
5. Budget
The last factor to consider is budget. With most of the models above there are designs at different price points so simply go for a design with a price you are happy to commit to.

It’s not essential you have waterproof golf shoes, but it’s very helpful if they are. Waterproof golf shoes will keep you dry if you’re suddenly caught in a rain shower or if the ground is wet underfoot. Even if you primarily play in dry conditions, having a waterproof shoe will give you peace of mind that your feet will stay dry if you get caught in a downpour.
Are waterproof golf shoes heavier than normal golf shoes?
Generally, yes. Waterproof golf shoes tend to be made of more robust materials that protect your feet from the elements on the golf course.
