In testing, we felt that this was an ideal option for any golfer who is looking for a versatile rain jacket that can be worn both on and off the course, with the lightweight feel and comfort very impressive.
Not only is it premium to touch, but the wind and waterproof construction worked perfectly in the most severe conditions, as the fully taped seams and 2.5-layer bonded fabric repelled away any water from the body. We tested the standard Rain.Rdy Jacket last year and were huge fans, but the only thing we felt that was missing was a hood. Enter this latest version which, firstly, looks absolutely fantastic and is versatile enough to be worn literally anywhere. The new design feels a lot lighter and the materials aren’t as thick, so on those colder days we needed to pair it with more layers, but this was also a benefit because it didn’t take up a lot of room in the bag and added next to no weight.
The waterproof protection hasn’t been compromised either, as we were caught in several downpours in testing and it performed brilliantly. It also felt comfortable and we liked the adjustability of the hood and elasticated cuffs. More colors needed though!

The headline garment in FootJoy’s HydroSeries range is this, the HydroTour. It comes with a premium price point but you undoubtedly get premium performance here starting with the waterproofing.
It has a three-panel construction and dual-sealed seams to stop any rain getting to your body and it also has a innovative feature called a DrySeal double collar system, which has a cinch cord on the inner layer to keep the rain out, and two small holes on the outer layer that help the water run down the back of the jacket, thereby keeping the neck dry.

We’ve always loved Galvin Green products and, with the Ames, it’s no different, as the new PFC-free three-layer fabric provides a stretchy feel. What’s more, there’s adjustable, elasticated Velcro cuffs, shaped sleeves, chest width tabs and a drawstring at the hem which work brilliantly to create a perfect fit.
Performance-wise, the fabric repelled water in severe downpours, with the droplets beading off almost instantly. Although it has a premium price tag, the Ames is certainly worth it and a worthwhile investment, especially as the design can be worn on and off the course.

In the most testing conditions, the Taran 3L Rainwear Jacket performed superbly, with the tester’s underlayers remaining completely dry after a huge downpour. The only slight moisture let through was via the neck but, thanks to the fully seam-sealed construction, the protection was excellent.
When it comes to comfort, the three-layer stretch waterproof fabric meant there was no restriction of movement and, because of the adjustable shock cord hem and cuff tabs, there are opportunities to improve the comfort further. Finally, there are an array of pockets available and, due to the two-way centre front zip, it makes access to underlayers convenient and easy.

G/FORE Weather Resistant Repeller 2.0 Rain Jacket

To begin with, the first thing we noticed about the G/FORE Weather Resistant Repeller 2.0 was the sleek looks. Personally, we felt it struck the balance between slim and loose perfectly and, because it is constructed of premium materials, there was no restriction whilst wearing it or when over a mid layer.
It features a 4-way stretch, which was particularly useful around our tester’s back and leading shoulder on the back swing. This was the main stand-out throughout but, it’s worth noting that, in rain showers, it works well but, in heavier deluges, the Repeller 2.0 does struggle slightly more. Therefore, if the forecast is reading heavy rain, you may be better off with a different jacket.

The DRYLBL Rain Jacket from Puma is a continuation of the performance we saw in the Ultradry jacket. Thanks to the 2.5 layer fabric, seam sealed design, and waterproof zips, the protection from this jacket was up there with some of the top models we have tested. Movement was also uninhibited and it felt lovely and light too, despite still offering a degree of warmth and breathability.
We also liked the adjustability on offer such as the Velcro cuffs so we could get the perfect fit, and another huge plus was the aesthetic because, whilst some may say it was a touch bland, we think it added to its versatility. This jacket can be used anywhere.

KJUS is known for their premium apparel particularly within the golf and ski sectors, and the first thing we noticed with the Pro 3L 3.0 jacket is the quality of design and materials used. A lot of waterproof jackets sacrifice stretch but that certainly isn’t the case when it comes to the 3.0, thanks to what the brand call body-zoned X-stretch panels which allow for maximum stretch in the areas you need it most.
The jacket did an excellent job in seeing beads of water seamlessly fall off this garment as the rain tumbled down, thanks to the non-porous, stretchable membrane. We also love the discreet, subtle aesthetics which make it usable everywhere. While this jacket is premium in price, coming to retail at $549, so is the look and performance.

Straight off the bat, the StormForce PX8 really impressed us, with the subtle coloring and panelling a nice stand-out. Another great factor is that, when we picked up the garment, it was incredibly lightweight, which makes it ideal if you have limited space in your golf bag.
Providing a tangible resistance to creasing, the stand-out came in terms of the freedom of movement which, thanks to a four-way stretch, allowed us to swing without any problems. The jacket boasts some other nice touches, too, such as a fine mesh lining and side adjustor tabs, but there are warmer models on the market.

Zero Restriction The Conqueror Jacket

We admit that the Zero Restriction is on the slightly pricier side, but it is crammed full of technology which performed superbly in testing. The waterproofing comes from a seam-sealed finish and DWR coating, which meant the elements were kept at bay brilliantly here. Crucially, water beaded off beautifully and the fully-lined hood was the perfect size.
Working well when worn with mid layers and other garments, the breathability, protection and fit was very good and, thanks to the freedom of movement The Conqueror provides, you can tell that every aspect of this jacket has been thought out. Overall, the premium price tag is backed up by what is a premium product!

Original Penguin Earl Full Zip Waterproof Jacket

Playable waterproofs are hard to come by but you’ll enjoy the experience of wearing this jacket during a passing shower on the course. The fit is loose enough that you’re able to combine it with warm layers underneath, like a mid layer or base layer, but features like the adjustable hem and Velcro cuffs allow you to create a tailored fit and remove any excess fabric that could get in the way of your swing.
We tested this jacket during some particularly heavy rain and it dealt with it admirably, ensuring we were bone dry underneath and allowing us to play the shots we wanted to without much restriction. The white piping against the black really adds to the visual appeal while the zipped pockets enhance the value further.
Sunderland Whisperdry Pro-Lite Jacket

This is a very good rain jacket thanks to its overall protection and design features. First it is ultra-lightweight and stretchy which made it very easy to swing in, and it folded down to next to nothing so storage was easy. Whilst this does mean more layers are needed in colder weather, the lightweight fabric didn’t compromise on waterproofing.
Water beaded off excellently thanks to the seam-sealed construction and we loved all the other adjustable features too including the inner storm flap, chin guard and cord-adjusting high neck, and the Velcro adjusters at the cuffs and waist. The only negatives were the pockets which were a touch small, and the design could probably be described as a bit bland. However that does also make it versatile so that’s a subjective point.

Peter Millar Shield Rain Shell Jacket

At the top of the Peter Millar range sits the Rain Walker Jacket and, just below that, is the Shield Half-Zip pictured above which continues the theme of outstanding performance. Constructed with a 2.5 layer performance fabric, you get seam-sealed waterproof and windproof protection, with it doing pretty well in regards to keeping the core warm as well.
This fabric is also incredibly lightweight, and has a lot of stretch to it so your swing is never compromised. Admittedly we would love more colors, it just comes in navy at the moment, but arguably this understated finish means it is versatile and can be used off the course too. Another element we really liked was the packable pouch, so the jacket folds down to practically nothing, and can easily fit in your bag.

Like other Galvin Green products, the Amos is crammed with technology, such as the brand’s Gore-Tex Paclite fabric with stretch technology. Fitted with a hood, it was this particular element that we really liked, due to the fact it was very effective in keeping out beads of rain when chipping and putting. Admittedly, it was slightly restrictive in the swing, especially when the drawstring is tightened, but it’s not impossible to make good contact.
Fit-wise, the Amos does come up slightly larger so, ideally, we would recommend going down a size. Importantly, though, the Amos has a number of useful features, like well laid-out pockets and softer fabric, which heightens the offering further.

Callaway Stormguard III Waterproof Rain Jacket

The first thing you’ll notice about the Stormguard III is that it is a good-looking jacket with strong colors and lots of little details that catch the eye. The Swing Tech technology does the job of allowing the wearer to swing uninhibited and this jacket also delivers on the waterproof front too, having been tested to the full during one particularly heavy downpour.
The lightly elasticated black inner sleeve cuffs are another real plus point. The beauty is that they fit snugly enough for you to not have to overly worry about how tight or loose you set the external Velcro cuff adjusters. We were also very impressed with the drawcord waist adjuster’s rubbery inner hem, which helps to prevent the jacket riding up as you swing.

Beginning with the looks and the jacket provides a very simple aesthetic that many will be keen on. Available in two base colorways, the zip helps it stand out and, in terms of ease of use, the two side pockets and adjustability of straps give it a comfortable fit.
In fact, when our tester first put this garment on, he felt it was huge but, thanks to the adjustable velcro straps on the back and on the sleeves you can really sharpen up the fit. Admittedly, it doesn’t have a hood, so water can get into the top half but, in terms of protection, the jacket itself does a good job of keeping you dry in the severest conditions.

First and foremost, the Oscar Jacobson Greylands Lightweight Waterproof Jacket has taped seams, and cuffing functionality at both wrist and waist allows no room for excess water to get in. Certainly, looks-wise, there is a good range of options in a market that is usually just one colorway.
In testing, we felt that it was lightweight and breathable and offered no obstruction in terms of course movement. However, it’s worth noting that, in achieving this, it has come at the expense of warmth, as this jacket has very little in the way of thermal lining and, therefore, acts as a waterproof piece only, so layering with a mid layer or vest is required.

Stuburt Leaden Lightweight Waterproof Jacket

The Stuburt Leaden Lightweight Waterproof Jacket is a good-looking garment that is extremely lightweight and can fold to very little when placing in your golf bag. Regarding aesthetics, we liked the white accent on the zip guard and the left-hand pocket.
In terms of comfort, it has an elasticated waist adjuster that keeps it tight around the body, but the slight downside is that the wrists are only partly elasticated with no adjustment available. Therefore, those who prefer a tighter fit may opt for something different. Overall, though, the Leaden is a great option that won’t break the bank, with the positives outweighing the negatives in term of performance.

To begin with, we thought that the Waterproof Rain Jacket has a cheerfulness about the three different designs this jacket comes in. All three offerings co-ordinate with the Ashworth Waterproof Rain Pant, which features in just one colour, navy, so you can pair it up for when the weather conditions really get bad.
In terms of performance, it has great breathability and waterproof protection and, thanks to a handy amount of features, such as two zipped pockets and two Velcro side adjustment tabs, the protection is aided further. One final aspect to mention is that the sleeves do come up slightly short, so it’s worth trying the garment out before you buy so you can gauge the correct sizing.

Abacus says that 37.5 technology works to improve the microenvironment inside the garment. It allows the vapor to be forced through the fabric quicker, keeping your body and the garment dry.
In testing we certainly felt this was the case as we played during an absolute downpour, and yet we remained perfectly dry. We also enjoyed the extreme 4-way stretch which makes this jacket extremely comfortable to play golf in and allowed for a full range of movement when hitting full shots with the driver or with the irons.

How we test for the best golf rain jackets
When it comes to testing waterproof jackets, and indeed all apparel, our ethos and methodology revolves around putting the gear on, and using it out on the golf course, in different conditions. Obviously to test waterproofing we game the apparel in wet conditions, and we have also gone to extreme measures before, like pouring water all over the jackets to test how seam-sealed they are.
We think the best way of actually testing golf products is to use them thoroughly on the golf course, over a number of rounds, but we also try them off the golf course too because some models are extremely versatile. We then use these experiences to create reviews and buying advice content. Speaking of which we should make very clear, no manufacturer can buy a good review from us, we tell it how we see it.
How to choose a rain jacket
So what are some of the factors you need to consider when trying to find the right waterproof golf jacket for you? Let’s take a look.
Waterproofing
Obviously the most important thing is waterproofing. If a jacket doesn’t keep the rain at bay, regardless of strength and duration, then it isn’t worth having. Thankfully pretty much all of the models above will protect you from the rain in excellent fashion largely because they have been designed specifically for that purpose.
In terms of specifics, when doing your research be aware of the phrase ‘water resistant’ because this does not mean the jacket is completely waterproof, and also check if jackets have been seam-sealed because this is usually a great barometer of how waterproof a jacket is. Protection
A good waterproof jacket will also help you in the wind and cold too. The best models stop the wind penetrating the fabric and making your core cold, and also have nice features like fleece lined pockets to give you some respite from the poor conditions.

If you are wearing it, you have to like what it looks like. No longer are golf rain jackets drab and boring to look at because now there are designs for all fashion senses. It is just a case of picking a design and color you like.
Freedom of movement
With all this protection, occasionally rain jackets can be large and cumbersome but in modern golf design this is no longer the case. How should a golf waterproof jacket fit?
A good golf waterproof jacket needs to find a delicate balance. It needs to feel slightly snug to keep you warm, not let any rain near the body, and to not interfere with the swing, but not too tight that it restricts movement. This is no real issue for the arms and cuffs really as most models have adjustability in these areas but you should be wary of getting the wrong size for the torso. A rule of thumb is that is must come down to roughly in line with the bottom of your belt.
