4 Trendy Home Decor Items I Always Thrift Instead of Buying New

Key Points

  • Thrifting trendy decor gives you a risk-free way to explore new styles before fully committing.
  • Mixing quirky secondhand finds with staples like neutral books or woven textures helps balance fun trends with timeless pieces.
  • Some trends, like oddly shaped vases, look great in theory but end up being impractical or hard to style.

When it comes to embracing new home decor trends, I always try to see if I can thrift decor items that fit the trend before buying new ones. This way, I can experiment with the decor trend without feeling guilty of spending too much or not liking it as much as I thought I would before moving on to the next. It’s also a fun and low-lift way to scavenge for items that fit the trend.

Below, I highlight four trendy home decor items I’ve thrifted throughout the years.

Food Inspired Decor

When food-shaped dishware and home decor were all the rage, I couldn’t help but hop on the trend because of all the unique, kitschy pieces I kept seeing online. From tomato-shaped rugs to strawberry-shaped salt and pepper shakers, the options were endless.

Even now, the trend has evolved into actual food-shaped candles being mixed into tablescapes with real vegetables and fruits as the main focal points.

I remember endlessly looking on the shelves at the thrift store for dishware, and found some adorable bell pepper bowls and bok choy sauce dishes.

Organic, Ceramic Vases

I think we can all remember when organic, ceramic vases were taking over homes left and right. I was always on the fence on this specific trend, so when I found similar variations of it at my local thrift store for a fraction of the price, I was ecstatic.

I rearranged some dried pampas into the vase, and although it gave off a classic look, it wasn’t for me in the long run. I found that it was challenging to style it with my own interior style, and I couldn’t even use it for functional purposes since it had an awkward “o” in the middle.

Minimalist Decor Items

Since minimalism has always been a go-to design style for many, I also dabbled in it by opting for woven textures when it came to rugs, organizers, throw pillows, blankets, and more. When thrifting, I would always look for neutral palettes so I could layer multiple textures throughout my space.

Decorative Tabletop Books

When it came to styling my coffee table, I knew I wanted a pop of color and visual interest that could be effortlessly layered with other decorative pieces. This way, I could swap out decor seasonally without doing a full refresh.

I managed to thrift two large decorative books in beige and soft pink colors, which complemented one another when they were stacked together. They were also neutral enough for me to throw a nice vase or accessory to create a fuller look.
