After testing patio umbrellas for several years, this umbrella remains our best overall for many reasons: its ease of assembly, sturdiness, durability, one-hand crank, one-button tilt mechanism, and water resistance.
While testing, we loved how effectively it kept the sun off a fairly large area. The 9-foot option shaded the area so completely that we didn’t need to increase our laptop’s screen brightness while sitting underneath it, and there’s an 11-foot size available, too.
We also found that the thick, acrylic fabric repelled rainwater well, and we could completely and quickly clean up the artificial “bird doo” we introduced during our tests. (The manufacturer claims the acrylic-material canopy doesn’t fade for at least five years.) This effectiveness remained the same after six months of use, to our delight.
The ample 13-color assortment—from black to natural and “sunflower yellow”—was far greater than most products we tested. The only downside is the package lacks a base, which, depending on the materials, can cost $50 or more. (In fact, it was rare to find a standard-style-type product that did.) Despite this, we find the EliteShade an excellent value.
Style: Standard | Size: 9 feet | Weight: 17 pounds | Coverage Area: 6-chair table | Tilt: Yes | Materials: Aluminum frame, acrylic canopy
We recommend the L.L. Bean Market Umbrella for those who plan to leave their patio umbrella outdoors year-round. During testing, the Sunbrella canopy fabric showed impressive resistance to mildew and fading—after months in the California sun, we noticed zero signs of wear or differences in the canopy’s color.
Even at midday on sunny days, we could easily read our phones or laptop screens without adjusting the brightness, similar to our best overall umbrella. While it wasn’t windy during our testing, we are confident that the skirted top vent on the canopy will help prevent toppling during gusty winds. During rainstorms, we stayed dry underneath.
This option requires two hands to open and close, but the mechanism is simple. We found the highest height to be the most attractive and effective at providing shade to two Adirondack chairs that sat underneath.
After a year, neither the weather nor the intense Los Angeles sunshine affected how great this umbrella looks. We rarely cleaned the umbrella over the course of the year, as it was still looking fresh. Since there is no offseason in this area, it has truly withstood a year of being outdoors and looks as great as it did when we set it up.
You’ll have to purchase the brand’s base separately, though. The powder-coated base weighs 50 pounds to stay in place. The wooden pole adds to the beauty of this option, but we wish there were a way to hide the cords that hang down from the pole. Otherwise, we love this umbrella that expertly combines style and functionality.

Cantilever umbrellas provide unobstructed shade over a large surface area, like a patio set, and this product is no exception. The 11-foot canopy shades 95 square feet without an annoying pole in the middle of your dining table or conversation pit. Over the six months of testing, we loved that it shaded nearly our entire deck.
A common concern about cantilever umbrellas is that they are difficult to assemble and move, but we found that this option was a breeze. It comes fully assembled, except for assembling the base and filling the sandbags. It was much less intimidating than we originally thought, but due to its size and weight, it’s helpful to have someone on hand to assist.
Even though this umbrella is quite large, it was super easy to open and close with the unique gliding handle mechanism. You can also lock it in place when you find a height you love. It also tilts (just turn the knob on the pole), protecting your patio from the sun at any time of day.
The polyester canopy felt durable during testing and successfully kept rain out when it was fully opened. We love that this umbrella comes with a cover for inclement weather or for storing during the winter. The cover comes with a collapsible pole to help reach the top of the umbrella when applying it. Thanks to the side pocket, you can place the pole right into the cover.
Over the course of six months, enduring lots of wind and rain, the umbrella remains sturdy and durable with an impressive shade scope. We aren’t in love with the base, however—it’s extremely flimsy, and the wind is constantly blowing the umbrella over due to the lack of a sturdy base. For next season, we’re going to purchase a new base for it and continue to use the umbrella.
Style: Cantilever | Size: 11 feet | Weight: 43.1 pounds | Coverage Area: 6-chair table | Tilt: Yes | Materials: Aluminum pole, polyester canopy
For its low price, we were impressed by the Blissun 9-inch Patio Umbrella’s ability to provide ample, deep shade that effectively blocks sun and rain. While testing, we had no trouble using a laptop under this umbrella, even in the bright Los Angeles sun.
During our testing period, we experienced unusually heavy rain in California, and the umbrella kept us completely dry. To help keep it sturdy, we filled the base (sold separately) with sand and water, and it withstood heavy winds without any issues. The manufacturer recommends just filling it with water, but we found that the sand added more security.
The 100 percent polyester shade is waterproof and UV-resistant, and we didn’t notice any fading after weeks in the sun. However, the crank mechanism is a bit awkward, forcing you to put your arm up the pole of the umbrella as you close it. While we wish it were lower, we still found it accessible and easy to use.
After using this for the past year, we can confirm that all parts are still in great condition and the crank works just like new. The fabric hasn’t been torn or damaged, but the color has faded a bit. Despite this, we’re impressed with how well it’s held up without ripping or rusting at the base.
This umbrella can tilt 45 degrees with the press of a button, but there are no other angle options available. Despite these minor issues, we enthusiastically recommend this umbrella for small decks or patios.

We think the Blissun 9-foot Lighted Patio Umbrella is the perfect option for anyone who wants to spend time outdoors after the sun goes down. During testing, we found ourselves using our patio more than ever before. We loved how the four solar-powered LED lights on each of its eight ribs provided festive lighting and ambiance to our outdoor space.
The tilt mechanism and its hand crank are easy to operate with minimal effort. During testing, we noted that the alloy-steel pole and tilting mechanism were high-quality and surprisingly light. However, we weren’t as enthusiastic about the canopy, noting that even though it cleaned up easily—and the manufacturer claims it’s UV-resistant—it didn’t block out all the sun.

You may need to squint a bit to read your laptop while sitting underneath, so it’s best for overcast or milder days. Still, we were impressed with the product’s overall value and wide color selection. After months of use, we also loved being able to read, work, or eat meals outside without worrying about becoming too hot or getting sunburnt.

What We Don’t Like
-
Flimsy base cover
-
No wheels
Cover your entire porch or outdoor dining set with this 15-foot lighted umbrella from Summit Living, the largest on our list. Despite testing this product in white, it effectively kept the bright Florida sun out and protected us from wind and rain, making it ideal for large outdoor spaces.
Despite its large size, the umbrella was very simple to assemble with clear instructions. The only thing to keep in mind is that you’ll need 50 pounds of sand to fill the base to finish the setup. For us, the whole process took about two hours, but it was worth it to shade our entire porch. Plus, the opening and closing mechanism was super smooth and easy, which is a plus for larger and heavier picks.
When opened and closed, the umbrella’s canopy was sturdy enough to withstand high winds. Even though it shook a bit, we were never worried about it falling over or blowing away. The polyester fabric felt a bit thinner than other umbrellas we’ve tried, but it still proved durable during testing.
An awesome feature of this umbrella is the solar-powered lights under the canopy, similar to our best pick with lights. The solar panels blend right into the umbrella and successfully charge the solar lights, so they emit an attractive, warm glow through the night. We loved the ambiance it provided over a large area.
After six months, this held up to Florida weather extremely well. Our only complaint is the base cover—it’s a bit flimsy since it just covers the sandbags and tends to collect dust and debris. We also wish the base had wheels so it was easier to move, so we recommend scoping out where this umbrella will live before assembling it.

High-quality, thick canopy
The most impressive part of the SunVilla Cantilever Umbrella is the number of features it includes that you can adjust with a single handle. During our testing, we were blown away by the quality of the base and canopy, along with the levels of customization it offers.
The single handle fits into several spots on the umbrella to adjust different features. First, the sturdy base has wheels, so it’s easy to move around your space (especially since it’s the heaviest pick on our list). Plug the handle in here to lift the wheels once it’s in the right place. Using the handle in the base also initially opens the umbrella.
From there, you can adjust the umbrella’s height, rotate it 360 degrees, and tilt it side to side. We couldn’t be more impressed with how this umbrella blocked even the most direct sunlight. The canopy is made from Outdura (a performance fabric similar to Sunbrella, which is our top choice for outdoor fabrics).
Wait, there’s more? Unlike our other favorite options with lights, this one features LED lights that you can adjust between red, blue, and green. We had so much fun experimenting with the different colors to fit our moods.
When testing this for over six months, the only issue we encountered was wasps beginning to make a nest in the umbrella—even if you’re not using it, we recommend opening this umbrella from time to time to avoid this.
We loved that the base came fully assembled, and you just needed to add water and screw in the pole. While we acknowledge the high price point, we’ve never tested another umbrella with this many adjustable features that still feels durable, so we think it’s worth the splurge.
Style: Cantilever | Size: 11 feet | Weight: 101.4 pounds | Coverage Area: 6-chair table | Tilt: Yes | Materials: Aluminum pole, Outdura canopy
Spend a lot of time outdoors? This 9-foot patio umbrella from Astella can tilt in either direction so you can block the sun all day long. We also like its generous shade area for the size and easy assembly.
We used this umbrella with a patio set that didn’t include a hole for an umbrella, so the tilt mechanism was imperative to shield our tables and chairs. The tilt mechanism was super easy to control with just the touch of a button, but it’s high up on the pole, so it could be hard to reach for shorter users.
The fabric successfully kept out the rain, but we opted to close it during windy weather, especially since it’s the lightest umbrella on our list. This makes it easier to move around your space, however. We will say that the two flaps on the umbrella make it more wind-resistant, but they can get caught on one another, so you might need to adjust it after opening.
After six months, our favorite thing is the sun protection—our black, metal outdoor furniture actually gets cooled off when the umbrella is open. Since it lacks a dedicated base, we’ve had stability issues with it blowing over. We chose one that didn’t require sand or water and was weighted over 25 pounds, but we might opt for an even heavier one.
Style: Standard | Size: 9 feet | Weight: 9 pounds | Coverage Area: 4-chair table | Tilt: Yes | Materials: Steel pole, polyester canopy
Final Verdict
After testing 44 patio umbrellas, our pick for the best patio umbrella is the EliteShade 3-Tier Market Umbrella. We love its easy assembly, color options, easy opening and tilting mechanisms, and water resistance. Our best budget pick, the Blissun Outdoor Patio Umbrella, also impressed us. We liked its easy-to-clean material and 18 color choices, which would blend well with virtually any outdoor decor.
How We Tested the Outdoor Patio Umbrellas
We tested 44 patio umbrellas in The Spruce’s outdoor Lab and in our backyards in California, Texas, New Jersey, Iowa, and Georgia. We evaluated each umbrella on our list on its assembly, design, effectiveness, ease of cleaning, and value. In some cases, we continued testing at home for six months (or more!).

Ease of Cleaning: Finally, for those we tested in our lab, we intentionally stained each umbrella and considered how easily the stains could be treated. At home, we wiped down the umbrellas after rain to clean water and debris.

What to Look for in a Patio Umbrella
Durable, Outdoor-Approved Material
A standard patio umbrella consists of a canopy, often made of an outdoor UV-resistant fabric (Sunbrella, the most common brand, is used for products like our best heavy-duty option, the L.L. Bean Sunbrella Market Umbrella), and a frame, which can be wood, fiberglass, or, most commonly, aluminum. Our best features pick, the SunVilla Color Changing LED Cantilever Umbrella, is made from Outdura, a similar performance fabric that’s waterproof and UV-resistant.
While Sunbrella is the best choice for a canopy, polyester is a common option as well. The waterproof polyester canopy on our best budget pick, the Blissun Outdoor Patio Umbrella, impressed us by providing ample shade to see our computer screens without letting rain in.
Wood is the most attractive (and the costliest) frame material (also seen on our best heavy-duty option, the L.L. Bean Sunbrella Market Umbrella), but this isn’t always the most weather-resistant material. Look for wood that’s been treated or stained for outdoor use. The rest of the umbrellas on this list have aluminum or iron frames, which won’t rust over time.

Yes, There are Different Types of Patio Umbrellas
Patio umbrellas come in different types for different uses. The most common type is inserted into a hole in your table and held in place by a stand (generally not included with the umbrella), like the EliteShade 3-Tier Market Umbrella, our best overall choice.
Our favorite cantilever umbrella, the Jeary Outdoor Aluminum Curvy Cantilever Umbrella, arches over the table and is supported by a stand placed a short distance away. While often heavier and more expensive, these umbrellas provide unobstructed shade without the annoyance of a pole.
An Appropriate Size to Shade Your Area
Most patio umbrellas measure anywhere from 5 to 11 feet in diameter. Generally, an 11-foot umbrella, like our best features pick, the SunVilla Color Changing LED Cantilever Umbrella, is large enough to cover a dining table or outdoor sectional.
If you’re shading one or two chairs, a smaller canopy, like our best budget pick, the Blissun Outdoor Patio Umbrella, will work just fine. The Astella Steel Patio Umbrella, our best pick with tilt, has the smallest canopy on our list at 9 feet, which will still adequately cover a small patio set.
To cover your entire patio with just one umbrella, opt for our best large pick, the Summit Living Double-Sided Solar Patio Umbrella, which has a 15-foot canopy: the largest on our list.

Smooth Operation
Most patio umbrellas operate with cranks to open and close their canopies, which should require little effort from the user.
Locking mechanisms, such as a pin, keep it open. Our best cantilever umbrella, the Jeary Outdoor Aluminum Curvy Cantilever Umbrella, accomplishes this with a slide mechanism that’s easy to glide up and down and then lock into place.
Other models, like our best umbrella with tilt, the Astella Steel Patio Umbrella, may accomplish this with pushbuttons.
Some umbrellas with pins offer different height options, like our best heavy-duty option, the L.L. Bean Sunbrella Market Umbrella. But if you need to close your umbrella—in case of high wind, for example, which can send an umbrella soaring—opt for the crank.
Our best features pick, the SunVilla Color Changing LED Cantilever Umbrella, has the most customization options and uses a single handle on various points on the umbrella to adjust the height, tilt, and colors of the LED lights.
Easy Maintenance and Cleaning
Consider how easy it is to clean the canopy, whether by simply spraying it with a garden hose or by needing more extensive cleaning, perhaps with a sponge and soapy water. Don’t use a power washer or any harsh chemicals, as the fibers holding the canopy together may give way, warns Young. Frames can gunk up as well; you can clean most with a damp cloth.
“If you’re looking for durability and longevity, give it [your umbrella] a rest,” says Young. “Close it up and even put it away when not in use—it will simply last longer.” Luckily, all of the options on this list wiped water and debris away quickly and easily during our testing.

Umbrellas After Dark
Several of our favorite patio umbrellas include lights under the canopy, which is a nice touch if you plan to use your umbrella after sundown. Our best pick with lights, the Blissun Solar Umbrella, and our best large pick, the Summit Living Double-Sided Solar Patio Umbrella, both use solar lights.
Solar lights charge in the sun during the day and automatically turn on at night. However, their duration can vary depending on the sun and how much they are charged that day.
Our best features pick, the SunVilla Color Changing LED Cantilever Umbrella, uses LED lights, which are more reliable, and you can choose between three colors, instead of classic white.
