5 Small Changes That Will Make You Finally Love Your Home, Designers Say

5 Small Changes That Will Make You Finally Love Your Home, Designers Say

Key Points

  • Declutter first and remove trendy or guilt-filled decor so only meaningful pieces remain.
  • Rearrange what you own and design with intention to support how you live and gather.
  • Add vintage, handmade, and natural elements to bring warmth, character, and personality.

Loving your home doesn’t always require a complete renovation or costly new decor haul. It might only require changing a few things you already own.

Sometimes, it’s the small, intentional changes that make a space finally feel right, and our designers have shared with us their tried-and-true tips for creating a home you’ll actually love.

Here are five ways designers say you can start loving your home by tailoring your space to be a true reflection of you and your own personal style.

Meet the Expert

  • Sarah Hart is the Owner and Principal Designer at Sarah Hart Interior Design in Charleston, South Carolina.
  • Susan Semmelmann is the CEO at Semmelman Interiors in Fort Worth, Texas.

Edit, Edit, Edit

The first thing both of our pros say needs to happen before you can love the decor in your home is to edit, edit, edit. And by “edit,” they mean declutter everything. Literally, everything.

“Keep only what makes you happy,” Hart says. “Get rid of the trends. If you bought it from a big box retailer, it’s likely a trend.”

Both of our experts say trendy pieces don’t always make a home you love, especially if the pieces aren’t a true reflection of you and your style. Their suggestion? Go through your decor, pieces, and yes, even the family heirlooms you have on display out of potential guilt.

Remove anything that doesn’t emotionally and visually serve a purpose in your home so you can begin designing a home you love with clarity.

Go Vintage or Handmade

Vintage or homemade pieces (that reflect your personal style) are essential to decorating your home with intent. Not only does this get rid of the trendy, retail look and feel, but honestly, vintage pieces are sometimes made with higher quality and do a better job of accentuating your space.

“Vintage pieces add a layer of texture and nostalgia, like they were made for you or passed down,” Hart says. “You can seriously tell a difference. Even if it’s subconscious and you can’t quite put your finger on it between mass-produced and handmade.”

Rearrange Your Furniture

A surprising revelation we learned from our experts is that your furniture may be keeping you from appreciating your home. Turns out, a simple rearrangement is all it takes to love the design.

“What you already own can feel entirely new when used with purpose,” Semmelman says. “Shift pieces toward natural light, conversation, and ease. This is a design that serves your rhythms instead of complicating them.”

Semmelman suggests rearranging the furniture to the flow of the room so it seems intentional and convenient.

“When furniture placement honors how you gather, host, and rest, the space becomes a partner instead of a pressure point,” she says. “Flow is a form of hospitality. It makes your home feel welcoming without effort and adds an organic ease that echoes our signature organic glamour aesthetic.”

Design With Purpose

While our designers can give specific recommendations for pieces they love all day, the only way to really appreciate the style of your home is to design with purpose. This means carefully considering how you want the room to feel and look.

“Ask yourself how you want the room to serve you: calm, clarity, warmth, or joy. When emotion leads, the design becomes more connected, more personal, and more life-giving. This is where couture design meets purpose. The goal is to pour into your home so it can pour right back into you,” says Semmelman.

Mix Natural Elements

There are certain elements to spaces that every designer says turn a house into a home, and nature staples are one of them.

Semmelman says fresh florals, branches, stone, and natural textures breathe life into a room, making the space feel more connected and more human.
